Reacting Vs Responding
What is the difference between Reacting and Responding?
The main difference between reacting and responding is that a reaction is automatic and unconscious, while a response is intentional and mindful.
Reaction
A reaction is often a defense mechanism that’s survival-oriented. It is usually quick, and unconscious, and can be spoken out of fear or anger. Reactions can be disproportionate to the event.
Response
A response is more intentional, slower, and requires attention. It’s based on information from both the conscious and unconscious mind. Responses create more space between an event and what you do, allowing you to better understand what’s happening and make a helpful plan. The mindful practice of using Freedom Phrases promote responding rather then reacting.
Practice mindfulness:
Mindfulness involves being aware of your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and environment.
Pause:
When something happens that might trigger a reaction, pause and don’t act immediately.
Consider our response:
Consider what the most compassionate and intelligent response might be.
Learn from our mistakes: Take note of what triggered your reaction and be more mindful next time.
Other Tips
Some other tips for responding instead of reacting include:
Noting:
Naming your emotions.
Body Scan:
Recognizing how your body feels.
Mindful Breathing:
Using your breath to regain control.
Questioning:
Asking yourself why you reacted.
